The Moving Mandala Global Seva Projects:

We are dedicated to the preservation and upliftment of global indigenous peoples and respective cultures through the promotion of their traditional arts along with supporting their existing communities. Our Seva Projects begin by asking where they most need support. We then respond to this invitation by helping to develop projects that encourage a thriving future while respecting their traditional ways.

Plan of Action:
The Moving Mandala is developing a project to donate a water catchment and filtration system to the Tibetan Refugee community of Ladakh. This system will incorporate all locally made materials for the water collection and storage tanks. Natural adobe material will be used rather than expensive large plastic cisterns. A natural permaculture grey water recycling filtration system will also be established to reduce the amount of water needed in the daily consumption. All these processes will involve locally available and inexpensive building materials, and will be an easily replaceable process so the Tibetan community may further develop their own systems.

For the type of system we are planning, it requires a minimum of 6 inches of annual rainfall, which is common amongst deserts. This can provide more than enough water to support a community. Once the land has been selected for the location of cisterns, the next step is building the cistern frame from sandbags as the support structure. This is then coated with natural plaster to create containers that can hold between 3-5,000 gallons of water each. We project to eventually construct 10 cisterns to hold between 30,000 and 50,000 gallons of water per year!

We will be employing the work of many Tibetans in the area, as well as inviting volunteers to participate from both the local area and abroad. Each day, the project starts with morning yoga and taoist chi gung practice, and during selected segments of the project will include activites with the women's retreat happening simultaneously.

The project will be documented in full with photography and film by professional documentarians. The intention is to feature a universal water catchment system available to diverse regions around the globe.

THe Water Team:

Tenley Wallace, creator and director of the The Moving Mandala. Her vision and intention for creating TMM is to support the continuation of the planet's rich traditions of sacred arts and culture. This includes projects that directly support the wellbeing of the indigenous communities who are responsible for carrying these sacred legacies across time. Along with developing the women's retreat and fundraising for the water project, Tenley's other focus is as the cultural ambassador between the Tibetan community and the water volunteers from the West.

Don McPherson, Graduated from UC Berkeley with a PhD in chemistry, and since then has created his own natural building material company which specializes in a waterproof, plaster like material made from locally available waste and earth products.

Tenasi Rama Lazar, www.artofunion.com. Graduated from University of South Carolina, with a Masters in Engineering, as well has completed several permaculture certification courses. For the past 3 years, he as been creating a permaculture haven in Costa Rica, where he currently resides. His focus for the project is creating a grey water recycling and filtration system that will purify waste grey water, making it usable for washing, cleaning, and eventually drinking.

Dan McLeod, A permaculture gardener and community organizer of Marin County, where he has spent the last two years working on watershed restoration for salmon habitats using water catchment systems www.spawnusa.org .

Destino Das, Permaculture Activist,co-creator of the moving mandala, creator of Drive on Water, New Technologies and Innovations www.driveonwater.com and co-founder Art of Union. He has worked with permaculture communities throughout Canada, Costa Rica, and the US. His focus for the project will be creating the cistern frame from sandbags as the support structure.
